Catechism Department

The word "catechism" comes from Latin catechismus "book of instruction," from Greek words katekhizein which mean “teach orally, instruct by word of mouth," and from katekhein "to resound" or “echo.” Catechism instruction was and is the means to carry out Jesus' command, "teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you," Matthew 28:20.

Since the inception of formal catechism classes in 2008, catechism classes at the Syro Malabar parish have been organized in an orderly and systematic way. Catechism has a pivotal role in our parish and where we envision a faith-filled future generation who can impart the same to their young and keep the flame of faith alive.

Catechism teachers or Catechists aim at enabling children to encounter Jesus Christ who is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” (Jn 14:6) Catechists do not just impart some knowledge about God; rather they encourage and help students to have a deep, intimate and personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Our Catechists envisage motivating the young ones to know God, to believe in Him and to lead God-centered lives through faith formation. Also, nurturing the faith of the young, developing Christ-like attitude and service in them, empowering them with traditional prayers and Word of God, conveying the traditions and culture of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church and thereby developing future leaders of the Church. The goal is to see Christ being formed in the faithful (Galatians 4:19).

This is an ongoing process and one that requires grace of God, guidance from the Holy Spirit and collaborative efforts from the Bishop, Pastors, Catechism core team, Catechists, PTA representatives, parents and students themselves.

Regular catechism classes at St. Alphonsa Syro Malabar Cathedral are held in two shifts as there are more than 650 students registered from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. Special Mass for Children takes place after their catechism classes. In the meantime, adults join the Malayalam Mass in the church.
